43 miles from Belfast by rail. Parliamentary borough. A thriving market town. Parish and urban district. Has railway station and post office, with all departments. An important port for the exportation of cattle and all kinds of agricultural produce to Liverpool. Its industries are brewing, tanning, ropemaking, &c. Newry returns one member (Mr. J. J. Mooney) to Parliament. Area of parish, 22,361 acres; parish population, 19,007; parliamentary borough, 13,623; town population, 12,405.
