There does not appear to be any record of an historical Marmion chiefship, and the name is of Norman origin, although sometimes used as a synonym of Merriman. It is my opinion that most of the claims to Irish chiefship made in the last few decades are questionable to say the least: (see http://homepage.eircom.net/%7Eseanjmurphy/chiefs/chiefswatch.htm). Sean Murphy Reply from The Chief Herald, Mr Fergus Gillespie: No one of the name Marmion has ever been recognised by the Chief Herald of Ireland as a clan chief . We have no knowledge of any claim to such a style. Fergus Gillespie Príomh-Aralt na hÉireann Chief Herald of Ireland. |
